Gingerbread goodness

There have been varying rumours recently about when owners of HTC's various Desire models will get an Android 2.3 Gingerbread update and now it appears the date is set for June.

HTC is rushing out its Incredible S handset, which was only unveiled at MWC 2 weeks ago, with the promise that it will receive the Gingerbread update ‘soon'.

As the last we heard was that handsets ordered via The Carphone Warehouse are due to ship any day now, it would appear the update is relatively imminent and Engadget has reported that the Incredible S will get Gingerbread by the end of Q2 2011, so June at the latest.

The report tallies with Three's promise that the update is ‘on its way' and possibly previous reports that the first Gingerbread update for the HTC family will come one or two months after the launch of the Desire S, which according to Amazon, will launch on 18 April.

It has previously been reported that updates for older HTC Desire models could start rolling out in June and that the Desire HD and Desire Z will be given priority over their older counterpart.

However, Engadget has now reported that the old Desires are now placed on the same update schedule as the newer iterations and Incredible S so loyal owners hanging onto the original vintage shouldn't have to wait as long as previously thought.

The new Desire S and Wildfire S are both due to ship with Gingerbread. It will be interesting to note how successful the Incredible S proves in comparison and whether shipping with Froyo with an update planned will be a turn-off for customers.

When did Google actually make 2.3 available to companies. I only ask as I find June a rather long time to wait for the update on my relativly new high end Desire HD from HTC.

Is there signs that HTC have too many handsets to support now and can't throw out the high level of support we were used to. I am still awaiting for an update from HTC to fix the xmas 2010 update that messed up the messaging on my DHD.

Just be grateful you don't have a Sony Ericsson phone - you'd be waiting forever (for 2.2)!

Or there simply isn't the same pressure on them to upgrade to 2.3 as there was for the 2.2 upgrade.

There were countless discussion about Froyo before it was out, when it came out, and whoops of joy when it was announced for various handsets. You can't say the same about Gingerbread. Perhaps this is due to Honeycomb also being discussed heavily at the same time, so Gingerbrad has become sort of sidelined, or perhaps it just isn't much of an upgrade as far as most people are concerned.
