Features and games

Windows Phone 7 will provide the following Xbox LIVE features:

  • Avatars. Connect to your Xbox LIVE profile and Avatar, or create a new one if you don't already have an Avatar or Xbox LIVE profile; take your 3-D Avatar and props with you on the phone with full closet access.
  • Friends. Bring your Xbox LIVE friends with you everywhere; compare Achievements, challenge rivals to your favorite game, and even see who's online and what they're doing on their consoles, PCs or phones.
  • Game access. Easily view and launch your full game library from a single location; find, try and buy new games either in the Marketplace or Games hub.
  • Achievements. Earn, view and track Achievements, view Xbox LIVE leaderboards and build your Gamerscore across Xbox 360 and Windows Phone 7 - every time you play an Xbox LIVE title.
  • Messaging. Communicate with all of your Xbox LIVE friends, any time you want, through Xbox LIVE messages.

It has geo defence, there is no reason for owning an iPod anymore.
But will it be subscription-based? - i.e. money to Microsoft every year for Xbox Live? As a poor student (:p) who doesn't own an Xbox, the idea of shelling out Ā£15/year or whatever it is would stick in my throat somewhat, unless games are included in that price.
I think as they are not offering real time multiplayer yet, only turn based, it would be a bit cheaky.

But things like the Zune pass are very tempting.

Only thing is, this feels like its a zune, not a phone. There is a lot to be said about keeping them separate. This last weekend I did a small cycling trip, it was very useful to have my fully charged phone last me all 3 days without adapters requiring precious bag space. GPS + Google Maps are very useful to stop getting lost especially when you start to get tired after that first 80k. If i'd been listening to music, the battery life would have been so much less :(
In that situation wouldn't it be best just to take a small, cheap mp3 player along with your phone?
Or buy a couple of spare batteries with the money you've saved by not buying an MP3.

Have to admit though, I've never used my phone as an MP3 player and doubt I will for a good while.
