Definitely maybe
We're not used to having to wait this long for a fix of new Apple mobile action. A new version of the iPhone has usually been announced, and maybe even become available, by now, but there's been nothing but signature silence from Apple to date.
But Apple has launched a new version of the phone every year since it was launched, and Q4 is always its biggest quarter for iPhone sales, so you don't need to be Nostradamus to conclude Apple is likely to launch a new phone sometime in Q3.
Such easy conjecture has fuelled the usual flood of speculative iPhone link-bait, stridently declaring Apple will launch a new iPhone some time in the autumn. But within all this SEO gold, there is a rumour consensus emerging around a few ‘facts'.
The WSJ has really stuck its neck out with the headline ‘Apple Readies New iPhone'. Its ‘people close to the matter' say Apple is preparing for a late September launch - which is at the early end of general speculation. It also says it will be a thinner version of the iPhone 4, with an 8 MP camera and Qualcomm modem.
The rest of the piece is mainly padding, but it does culminate with the rumour that Apple is also working on a lower-priced iPhone that will have an edge-to-edge screen, as well as a new way of charging the phone - presumably inductive.
Meanwhile the ex-Engadgeteers at This is my next have seen the iPhone rumours and raised them an iPad rumour. They reckon a new iPad will be launched at the same time that will have double the screen resolution of the current one - 2048x1536 - which will be called the iPad HD, and targeted at a higher-end market.
We've probably got three months, give-or-take, until all this new shininess arrives, so expect a lot more rumour and speculation over the summer months.
