Reports in the Korea Times seem to confirm that LG will be helping Google produce the next Nexus smartphone, the Nexus 5. We saw some rumoured specs and an image purported to be this device, codenamed “Megalodon”, a few weeks ago. Furthermore, at the weekend, pedigree smartphone leaker EVLeaks has supplied some more images of a new unnamed LG device.
LG and Google
LG has done well out of the Google Nexus partnership according to industry watchers. The Nexus 4 is a hit device and the only fly in the ointment of this keenly priced flagship Android device were the initial supply problems. TechCrunch reports that LG’s produced Nexus 4, and its Optimus G, helped its smartphone division live profitably in the shadow of Samsung and Apple.
The Korea Times suggested LG was going to partner with Google on more than just the next Nexus smartphone: “Currently, the consumer electronics arm of LG Group is working with Internet-giant Google to make another Nexus-branded Google Android smartphone. LG is seeking to expand its partnership in TVs and future businesses, such as Google Glass.” Such options were discussed between LG’s CEO and Google’s Larry Page in South Korea recently.
LG Nexus 5 pictured?
We don’t have any more specs for the Nexus 5 from any sources so the previously leaked Megalodon specs will have to stand uncorrected for now. However at the weekend prolific smartphone imagery leaker EVLeaks published two photos of a new unnamed LG smartphone. This image was released with the comment “Whoa...” and on Sunday the site supplied a 100 per cent crop of the upper bezel showing the front camera, two sensors/LEDs and a speaker. A further post indicates that the screen is 5.5-inches in diagonal.
Unfortunately there are no back of case images, which may or may not have revealed a NEXUS logo and made things easy for us. There is much debate whether this new image shows a Nexus 5 or alternatively an Optimus G2. The current generation Nexus 4 and LG Optimus G share a good many specifications so the next generation of this pair of phone may also have a lot in common.
