Back in October, we reported on rumours of a version of Gmail for Android that was at long-last a truly viable alternative to third-party e-mail apps was in the works, featuring pinch-to-zoom and swipe to archive/delete.
It's with great joy that we can announce Google has at last released this long-awaited update, Gmail version 4.2.1 and, that it indeed delivers pinch-to-zoom and, a little more.
As to not confuse average Joe, the new pinch-to-zoom feature is disabled by default, to enable, head on over to General Settings and tick the 'Auto-fit messages' box. Likewise, by default, the new swipe feature will archive Inbox items, de-tag items in other folders and delete from Sent Mail. Changing the 'Swiping conversation list' setting to always deletes will default swipe operations to delete from any folder.
Gmail now better copes with photo and videos, allowing files to be attached from within the app, with new capabilities to handle large photo previews and to open attachments within Gallery. Last but not least, you'll find some minor bug fixes and performance enhancements bundled in with this update.
Hurrah Gmail! You've at last entered the modern era.
p.s. No, you don't require Android 4.2 to receive this update, new features are available from Android 4.0 and up, with performance enhancements and bug fixes reaching 2.2 owners.
