As Engadget said in its original story, you expect a few leaks prior to the launch of a major new version of Android, but not necessarily a two minute video walkthrough.

But that's exactly what the gadget blog got, courtesy of an anonymous reader who ordered a Nexus S on eBay. Imagine his surprise when he turned the thing and it was running a version of Android that hasn't even been released yet.

Furthermore Ice Cream Sandwich, which is expected to be called Android 4.0 when it's launched, is the most significant version for some time as it recombines the two versions of Android created when Google launched Honeycomb at the end of last year especially for tablets.

The story says it's possible this could be a hoax, or not entirely representative of the final build, but it's worth watching for some of the new features it seems to reveal. Without meaning to sound ungrateful, the video is irritatingly amateurish at times, but it's worth persisting with to get an idea of some of the goodies Google has in store for us. For his troubles the tipster apparently got his phone remotely wiped by Google, which you can read all about here.

Nice :D

Slightly concerning that Google could wipe my phone at any given moment. I wonder if iOS/WP7 has the same capability..
<flame proof hat>Isn't it funny how android (and its various re-skins) are starting to look more and more like iOS with the same concepts? Row of most used icons at the bottom, the way folders work, the notifications area etc..until you get into the oodles of config settings where it reverts to “yuk”</flame proof hat>

With a slightly more objective head on, it's looking better..closer to something I would want to use, but doesn't quite have the polish yet, from that video at least.

Wonder how it got leaked out? and even ended up on ebay…presumably it was a field test device that “went missing”, which is why Google were able to legally remote wipe the device.

You'll need more than a hat with those kinds of comments :p

I don't think it's funny - it essentially boils down to ergonomics. If there's a particular way of doing something that people find easier to use, everyone will eventually move to doing it that way. Apple simply hit the right ergonomics first: kudos to them.

I say funny because of how much many android users berate iOS for it's features, but then will be celebrated when they come to android ;) The same thing happens the other way of course, just that as I prefer iOS as a mobile OS this is more amusing ;)

Its a positive step though and the right thing to do - both of these OS's have features and design principles that work really well, and convergence is the best way to improve them both. They should indeed be stealing the best ideas from each other, as it benefits all of us.
and its funny how iOS5 is copying the `neat` features from android that apple users have been asking for - soon enough we`ll get GUI`s that all look and run very similar….
