Better late than never?
Owners of the older HTC Desire handset will face a pretty long wait for the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update after HTC has said newer versions such as the Desire HD and Z will get the update first.
According to cnet, the Desire range that is currently available will not get a Gingerbread boost until the Desire S hits the shops this spring. The website reported that a rep at MWC said the first Gingerbread update will be released 1 or 2 months after the launch of the Desire S.
HTC unveiled the new Desire S model at MWC, although users of the HEXUS forum seem a little disappointed with its spec. The revamped handset is inspired but another HTC model- the Legend, as it is crafted from a single block of aluminium. Inside, there is Qualcomm's 1GHz Snapdragon MSM8255 processor. The phone also boasts dual front and back cameras, HD-video recording and a 3.7 inch WVGA display.
As with most updates, the Desire phones will seemingly receive the boost in dribs and drabs, with the Desire HD and Desire Z being given priority over their older counterpart.
Cnet said that in the best-case scenario, the Desire S will launch in May and therefore updates to older Desires will start rolling out in June.
However, for the pessimists out there, it reckons that if the Desire S hits the shops in June, it could be around September until loyal owners of the older model get their Gingerbread treat...And that's if all goes well with networks testing and adding their stamp to the update.
The Desire HD and Desire Z launched with Android 2.2 Froyo, while all the original Desire models should now have been upgraded to Froyo, despite having launched with Android 2.1.
