Bothersome bug
Google has vowed to fix a bug hitting some users on its Android mobile platform that sends texts to the wrong people.
The bug originally surfaced last year and has affected a small proportion of Android users who have seen texts sent to randomly wrong recipients, the BBC reported.
Google reportedly said it has now ‘developed a fix' for the glitch and is rolling it out soon in a bid to beat the problem that first reared its head almost a year ago and increased in the summer. The story goes that Google mixed up the problem with another bug and thought it had fixed it.
An engineer on Android's security team called Nik Kralevich told the Beeb: "It took us some time to reproduce this issue, as it appears that it's only occurring very rarely. Even so, we've now managed to both reproduce it and develop a fix that we will deploy."
While a relatively small number of people are thought to have been affected by the unfortunate bug, some Android users have apparently said it has cost them dear both in terms of finances and dignity!
One user wrote on Google's bug forum: "This has happened to me numerous times when I reply to a thread. I told a co-worker I loved her instead of my boyfriend and some other embarrassing comments," while another victim of the bug said: "I was wondering how I inadvertently texted my current girlfriend with a message intended for my ex-girlfriend and now I have no girlfriend."
Auntie picked out a comment that reportedly read: "Today I sent a text asking about a contract from a potential employer...and it went to my current boss. If this hurts my career, I will be looking into legal action."
