The Final Whistle...

One of the most notable additions is 'Be A Pro' mode. This allows you to choose a single position on the pitch and then play as that one player throughout the match. In my opinion this is one of the finest game modes I've ever played in a football game.

You view the action from the top-down viewpoint (though you can change angles) and you constantly need to think about how you'd play in that position, keeping a close eye on your teammates movements, moving into space, passing when relevant or just perhaps even just hoofing the ball into touch if you're in a spot of defensive bother. You can call for the ball from team-mates, call for back-up or ask for a through ball. This mode gives you a superb insight into the tactics that players must use in the real world of football and is a superb addition to the series.

FIFA 08 also sees the debut of the interactive leagues, and though I'm disappointed that this doesn't include the lower divisions, it's still a welcome addition which adds a bit of intensity and rivalry each weekend. When you join the interactive league you have a 48hr window to choose your Premiership team and then you have to play the same match that they are actually playing on that weekend.

This means that it's more than likely that you will actually play a fan of that team. Last weekend I played as Aston Villa against West Ham and it was probably the best match I've had since I've picked up FIFA, with good banter with a Hammers fan and plenty of drama on the pitch. Of course, there is far more at stake than just rising up the individual rankings: three points and the reputation of your team means that you’ll fight tooth and nail to win.

The results are calculated, combined and presented in a league table that runs in conjunction with the real league table throughout the season.

Also, worthy a mention is the Challenge mode in which you can unlock extra kits, balls and achievements. Amongst the challenges on offer, you'll need to score with a midfielder within 10 minutes of kick off and not concede a corner during a match. Some of them are infuriatingly difficult, but the mode still manages to keep you coming back for more.

Despite a few niggles, what I love about the FIFA franchise again this year is that EA haven't sat back and just brought out the same game with a few small tweaks here and there. They're continually striving to push the franchise forward and compete with the Pro Evolution series, adding relevant new features and attempting to make the game on the pitch more authentic. The pick up and play fast paced, high scoring matches are a thing of the past and FIFA 08 requires a more logical, patient approach, which may frustrate some people. Despite my own initial shock at the changes and the fact that it's going to take a long time to master, I'm loving every minute of playing this latest FIFA game.

Pros
A more realistic football simulation
Be A Pro Mode is fantastic
Challenge mode is addictive
More challenging
Interactive league adds intensity to games
Smooth online play
Cons
No depth to management mode
Pulling off tricks doesn't seem natural
More a challenge = difficult to master

The FIFA franchise is moving with the times with great new features and an altogether more realistic soccer game.
