Gaming with the C64

Hook the C64 DTV up to your television and turn it on, and you'll be greeted with the Commodore logo for a second, before seeing what will be a familiar face for C64 users of old.

The device will then automatically load the menu screen, allowing you to choose which game to run. There are supposedly Easter eggs aplenty in the device, allowing you to use an on-screen keyboard at the prompt you see above and the like - Something to look out for.

As we covered earlier, the C64 DTV contains thirty titles in its ROM chip. Let's take a look at the full list.

  • Championship Wrestling
  • Cyberdyne Warrior
  • Cybernoid
  • Cybernoid II
  • Eliminator
  • Excelon
  • Firelord
  • Gateway to Apshai
  • Impossible Mission,
  • Impossible Mission II
  • Jumpman Jr.
  • Paradroid
  • Pitstop
  • Pitstop II
  • Ranarama
  • Silicon Warrior
  • Speedball
  • Summer Games
  • Supercycle
  • Sword of Fargoal
  • Tower Toppler
  • Uridium
  • Winter Games,
  • World Karate Championship A
  • World Karate Championship B
  • Zynaps
  • Bull-riding
  • Flying disc
  • Sumo-wrestling
  • Surfing

Plenty to keep you busy with, that's for sure. Many of these games are from the Epyx and Hewson development stables of the time - Two big names in the world of C64 games. I'll just cover a few of my personal favourites here.

World Karate Championship

Many of you will probably recognise this game as International Karate (It's certainly the name I remember it as). It's a fun karate title, where the aim of the game is to knock down your opponent and win rounds, thus progressing through the various belts available. The original was always at its best as a two-player game, which sadly isn't possible via this device, but it's still a good laugh nonetheless.

Tower Toppler

This was one of my favourite games for the Commodore 64, although I swear I remember it under a different name that I can't put my finger on. Anyway, this game is a platform puzzle game which is all about traversing various towers while avoiding the enemies and traps that guard it. Be warned, it's seriously addictive.

Impossible Mission / Impossible Mission II

Find computer codes hidden in furniture scattered throughout the lair of some evil madman. They weren't kidding when they called it Impossible Mission either - This game is hard! It also contains a smattering of synthesised speech, which will most likely have you in stitches for various reasons.

Speedball

This one was the show-stopper for me - The Bitmap Brothers Speedball game. One of the best sports games of its time, it mixed football, American football and violence into a hugely fun game to play. The best title of the bunch if you ask me.

The rest of you will no doubt find your own favourites in the batch of titles on offer but there should be something for most tastes, from platform games to sideways scrolling shooters.
