Conclusion, final thoughts and awards
Now, let’s have a look at the multiplayer aspect of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08, because this has to be one of the most supported multiplayer modes I’ve seen on the DS in a long time. First off, there’s the usual WiFi play connecting to local machines… which supports up to four players with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 cards or two players without a card. Once connected you’ve got a choice of Stroke Play, Match Play, Skins or Stableford. You’ve got the same options if you choose to go online over the Nintendo WiFi Connection but here you can either just play random opponents from around the web or, more in the spirit of golf, you can find a friend using the new Friend Code system and play them instead.
But the best mode for me has to be the pass play, where all you need is one DS, one Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 card and three mates. It’s pretty much as the name suggests. You play your shot and then pass the DS on to the next player. Golf rules of furthest from the pin plays run here, so it feels more like real golf in one mate can be left hacking away whilst everyone else waits up on the green… just be careful the sly bugger doesn’t play your shot and belt your ball back down the fairway.
So, that’s about all there is to Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 on the DS. It’s graphical more than adequate and the Touch Swing system is quite simply the only way to play. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 isn’t a perfect game of golf though, which is slightly frustrating as it has so much promise and EA have obviously ploughed loads of development time into this new version.
The club bug is the most annoying niggle followed by the more frequent but workable bug of the distance marker rarely being correct. Putting seems abnormally hard, even for a seasoned Tiger Woods pro such as myself and the greens really do feel soggy compared to every other Tiger Woods PGA Tour game.
Overall though, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 is very acceptable game of golf on the DS and for those of us that like the challenge of going online and taking on all-comers, the mobility aspect can’t be ignored. As a way to pass journey times until you can get some Tiger at home on your PC or console, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 has to get a big thumbs up from me.
