What no HD DVD?

Microsoft have announced that they have no plans to integrate HD-DVD support into the Xbox 360.

There has been speculation for some time that Microsoft would announce a HD-DVD add on for the 360 sometime next year.

"Microsoft, in both America and Japan, has not announced anything regarding the possibility of a next generation DVD drive being placed in the Xbox 360," read an official response offered to US consumer games site IGN.com. "There are currently no plans to release an Xbox 360 equipped with a next generation DVD player."

Speculation over whether such a device might be forthcoming originated with comments made back in August by Bill Gates himself, who said: "We are looking at whether future versions of Xbox 360 will incorporate an additional capacity of an HD-DVD player or something else."

Does anyone think they need to anyway? I am sure there will be some early enthusiasts that will want it, but the vast majority of consumers will probably be sticking with vanilla DVD for some years. As MS want to reduce the life span of consoles anyway, maybe it's just as well they wait until the Xbox720, or whatever it's too be called. But i bet Sony are chuffed to bits. At least, it's probably the best stratagy for MS i would have thought.
i bet that will annoy the HD-DVD camp as surly that was there best chance of getting the HD-DVD popular with consumers.
Microsoft have voiced support for HD-DVD though. They stated they will only biuld in support for HD-DVD and not Blu-Ray in the next version of Windows.
Sounds like this format war will end like DVD-R and DVD+R, where we have drives supporting both. What a waste of time!!
