Save the planet and still play games

Ok, so we all know that leaving your kit on stand-by is a bad thing but when there's no actual power switch to shut off your console, what do you do? Scrabble around the back of the telly every time you want to turn it on or off?

Your PS3, XBox 360, PS2 and Xbox are all fine, a power down on them is a true power down but the Wii is like your TV, it's not actually off unless you cut the power source by turning it off at the plug socket.

One green gamer has measured his the juice sucked up by his Wii and whilst he reports in his blog that the Wii uses just 18 Watts when you play, it uses a rather less impressive 10 Watts on stand-by.

But fear not, you too can do your bit to stop Essex flooding, (which, as anyone who's been to Romford will agree isn't actually a bad thing), by simply turning off the WiiConnect24. This drops the stand-by power consumption to just 1 Watt.

It's all done through the Wii set-up options and if you can't figure out, have a look at the blog for a guide. And then check out these rather cool Hemp Clogs and Sandals, you hippie.

Yeah, you just turn off WiiConnect24. :)

But be aware, this will stop the disc slot from glowing blue when orcs are nearby.

Not true. Both the PS2/3 have proper switches on the back, so when they are off, no power is being taken by the consoles. Otherwise they are in standby mode.

The Xbox had no power switch, but had to be left in a standby state to maintain the clock. The 360 also has no switch, but again when the power brick is connected you can see the power LED glowing. Unless the power is cut from both consoles at the wall, that is the only way to get a true power down. Just because they don't have a visible standby LED, doesn't mean they aren't in standby mode.

If you truly want to be green, then the only way is to switch your consoles off at the wall. If getting your hand behind a load of units is too much, then get a remote power switch, or have them all connected to an extension lead where you can get easy access to the switch.
I just switch my wii off from the wall

The 360 brick draws 2 watts in standby mode. I just tried and was suprised. I'd have thought that it would be more for such a large thing.
