Industry magazine, MCV, is reporting that Sony's law firm have issued a further statement to re-iterate the trouble that PS3 importers could land themselves in if they continue to offer the console for sale in regions where it hasn't yet been released.
Davenport Lyons have told the magazine that anyone selling the system is taking a huge risk and any profits that sellers make from the venture will be insignifcant compared to the costs that they'd incur if Sony catch them.
“As far as importers of PS3s are concerned, they should bear in mind that any profit they may make from importing the consoles into Europe without Sony’s consent this Christmas may well be short lived,” said company lawyer Mitra Pahlabod . “They run the real risk of defending lengthy and costly trademark infringement proceedings.”
Apparently, Sony are already investigating an advert in the UK that promises gamers that they can get their hands on a PS3 before Christmas. The unnamed company is said to have been reported to UK trading standards.
“Brand owners should be aware of their rights with regard to grey importing, monitor closely the sale of their goods and where possible ensure that their trademark registrations are kept fully up to date,” Pahlabod concluded.
Bah...humbug.
