Apparently, the official UK Playstation magazine claims that there will approximately 150,000 Playstation 3s available on launch day. During E3 in May, Sony revealed that two million units would be available for the global launch, so it appears that the U.K have done pretty well for stock.
Currently it's unclear if the high-end unit (which includes a 60GB hard-disk drive, a memory card reader, a Wi-Fi adaptor and a digital high-definition video connector) will be the only console available to the British or whether Sony will unleash the cheaper lower end 20GB version as well.
The latest industry mogul to make comment on the price of the PS3 is Ubisoft president, Yves Guillemot. Speaking to Bloomerg recently he said that Sony must be prepared to drop the PS3 price in 2007 if they want to compete with the Xbox 360. Guillemot feels that the high price will put casual gamers off purchasing the console.
On the flip side, Scott Steinberg, Sega of America's VP of Marketing feels that the price is within expectations. In an interview with GameDaily.biz he said, We're obviously staunch supporters of the PS3 and we think the platform is going to be successful.
In its first month, the Xbox 360 was estimated to have sold 75,000 units in the U.K, so if the PS3 figures are correct there should be plenty available for all those who can afford it. The pricey console will be available on November 17th.
There's no official word from Sony, so treat this as pure rumour.
UPDATE Sony have denied the U.K allocation figures.
