Sony has a new version of the PS3 Slim currently on the market which contains a shrunken version of the RSX GPU.

The latest PS3 SKU, which now shrinks the GPU from 65nm to 45nm, means that manufacturing costs have dropped so Sony could finally be in a position to make money on each console sold.

The (CECH-2100A) revision also uses less power, a fifteen percent drop according to some sources. Other revisions include 2 x 128MB XDR Chips instead of 4x64MB, a smaller cooling system and a reduced power supply.

PlayStation University has more details, including a graph that details the power consumption.

The graph on the linked page is either incorrect or showing the first revision of the 360 because my console uses about 120w while playing a non-installed game and about 105 for an installed game. My system is an Opus platform so not the most efficient release to date either! That's a pretty pointless graph really, showing old versions of all the consoles and no comparison to the new ones??
MS are taking long enough with their 45nm system though which was planned for 2009 but the slim console (wonder what it will look like?) announced on the news post after this should be using it.
