Developer presses on without the backing of Microsoft

Cryptic Studios, the developer behind the City of Heroes and City Of Villians videogames has confirmed that they are now working on, Champions Online, another superhero MMO, set for both PC and consoles.

Cryptic were to release Marvel Universe Online for Xbox 360 and PC, but Microsoft's Shane Kim announced recently at the D.I.C.E. Summit.that the project was scrapped due to the game’s "an inability to compete" with the current MMO market.

“When we first entered into the development and agreement of the development of ‘Marvel Universe Online,’ we thought we would create another subscription-based MMO. And if you really look at the data there’s basically one that’s successful and everything else wouldn’t meet our level or definition of commercial success,”Kim told multiplayer blog MTV.

So, has Cryptic Studios simply just changed the name and are pressing on with the project, without the characters from the Marvel universe? It certainly looks that way.

More details on Champions Online are set to be released in next month’s edition of Game Informer magazine.
