New handheld

We've thought for some time that Microsoft would be creating a gaming handheld to compete with the Sony PSP, Mercury News appears to have the scoop on the whole story.

According to Mercury News gaming writer Dean Takahash, there is a gaming hand-held just over the horizon.

Takahash claims that he found out the information while researching his new book. He says, The Microsoft product would compete with Sony, Nintendo and Apple Computer's products, including the iPod. And Microsoft has some of its most seasoned talent from the division that created its popular Xbox 360 working on it. Game executive J Allard leads the project, and its director is Greg Gibson, who was the system designer on the Xbox 360 video game console. Bryan Lee, the finance chief on the Xbox business, is leading the business side of the project.

Microsoft toyed with the idea of the Xboy a few years ago but nothing ever materialised. This new handheld may be a long way off but, with the likes of J Allard on board, it's definitely going to be worth the wait.

Dean also doesn't rule out the possibility of playing Xbox 1 games on the new device.

We'll bring you more information once it has been revealed.
