Trendy Twitter
The Gulf oil spill has topped Twitter's 2010 trends list, which summarises the year's biggest news, tech and celeb subjects that graced some of the 25bn tweets on the micro blogging website this year.
Having defended itself when accused of censoring tweets for WikiLeaks and the student protests, Twitter has recently revealed how trending data is calculated- ranking the number of new mentions so to pick up breaking news.
For those people still convinced that Twitter is guilty of censoring its trends, it might be interesting to note that ‘WikiLeaks Cablegate' is seventh in the ‘news events' trending list of 2010.
Without further ado, the top 10 trends across Twitter of 2010 were:
- Gulf Oil Spill
- FIFA World Cup
- Inception
- Haiti Earthquake
- Vuvuzela
- Apple iPad
- Google Android
- Justin Bieber
- Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows
- Pulpo Paul
Just as with Google's Zeitgeist, Twitter's list may have people questioning whether the top trends are sanitised as there are no dubious entries.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Justin Bieber was the most trendy celeb name, but Julian Assange appeared in fourth place. Sticking with technology, Apple's iPad topped the tech trend list and 4 of the 10 entries were Apple products.
Meanwhile Google got 2 entries in the top 10 tech trend list, while Call of Duty Black Ops was the only game to get a name-check.
Although some tech and celeb entries might have been pretty easy to predict, the top 10 hashtags of 2010 were more unusual, centring on nostalgic topics like #rememberwhen (the number 1 hashtag) and #wheniwaslittle as well as slightly naughtier entries like #slapyourself and #confessiontime...perhaps more in line with time-wasting topics people might associate with Twitter.
