If you've got mobile phones hanging out of your pockets, why not recycle one or two of them? Tesco are now offering a recycling scheme via its online website, tescomobilerecycle.com.

The process itself couldn't be much easier, you select which handset you have and once your details are collected, Tesco send out a prepaid envelope, you simply put your phone in, send it back and await your reward which could be up to £70 worth of gift vouchers.

Should you be wondering why you should recycle your old phone instead of throwing it in the bin, here are a few reasons Tesco have provided:

  • Mobile phones are on average only used for 12 to 24 months until they are replaced by new handsets. As a result, over 100 million mobile phones are unused in Europe every year, and that number is growing.
  • Do you know it's illegal to put your old handsets in household waste?
  • There are estimated to be 66 million old and unused mobile phones in the UK
  • Less than 10% of these are recycled
  • Around 24.5 million phones are upgraded each and every year ….which would mean the "phone mountain" is potentially increasing year on year by at least 17.9 million phones!
  • Phones can add to the to the burden of landfill and potential toxins from batteries and plastics can leak into the ground
  • Every phone can either be re-used or recycled
  • Re-use of phones is better for the environment – no new raw materials are required, and the life of the phone is extended

Head on over to the Tesco Mobile Recycle website and see which rewards you may qualify for.

Eh??? That's not cynicism that's crazy talk. The phones will only leech toxins into the groundwater when they're left to rot in soil where being immersed in a damp environment oxidises the metals and plastics over time.

Getting the phones out to third world countries to be reused is a good thing! Though it would be properly cynical to say that also means they're the ones that have to worry about dumping them after they're done using them :)
