Sky's high-definition satellite TV service Sky HD will go on sale to the general public next Wednesday, April 12, with installations due to begin in May. Installations can be booked on the net at http://www.sky.com/hd, at "selected" retail outlets or by calling Sky direct on 08702 40 40 20.
As we revealed last month, subscribers will pay £299 for a high-def-compatible set-top box plus £10 per month on top of their Sky digital subscription but installations will be free to new and existing Sky customers until May 31 or earlier if stocks run out.
The Sky HD box is a combined receiver PVR and will carry a 160GB hard disk. Sky says this will allow the recording of around 30 hours of HD programmes or 80 hours of standard definition. The Sky HD box also offers Sky+ functionality - allowing users to pause and rewind live TV, record two channels simultaneously and automatically record every episode of a selected series. To take advantage of these features, though, requires a Sky+ subscription that's £10 per month or free to those who subscribe to two or more Sky Premium Channels.
An HD-compatible TV set is also required and is not part of the package. Some HD programmes, Sky says, will be broadcast in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound and for best results will require a compatible decoder and amp, along with surround-sound speakers.
