Sony is upping the technology ante by releasing 3D PlayStation 3 gaming and 3D-capable TVs tomorrow.

John Koller, director of hardware marketing for PlayStation, stated in his blog that "The moment is here — starting tomorrow [Thursday in the UK], high-definition stereoscopic 3D gaming will be available in your very own living rooms! As you already know, all PlayStation 3 systems are already equipped with everything they need to play stereoscopic 3D games. Thanks to a free firmware update released this past April, the PS3 system is the only console on the market that can support full stereoscopic 3D gaming — right from your living room, and with no additional charge."

Those 3D games he alluded to are full versions of WipeOut HD and Super Stardust HD, along with a 3D-optimised downtown area from PAIN, and a one-track demo of MotorStorm Pacific Rift.

Coming down via the PlayStation network to PS3 consoles, free vouchers will be provided if you purchase a 3D-enabled BRAVIA TV, otherwise the bundle will be available for €29.99. Sony lists three models in the 3D range, with the KDL-HX803, pictured above, to be made available in 40in and 46in models, due to go on sale tomorrow, followed by the range-topping LX903 in July. Bear in mind that you will also need to shell out for active-shutter glasses and an external transmitter for the HX803.

Personally I think it's the HX903 that looks the most interesting, local dimming LED backlight and 3d ready - only problem is the 46“ costs as much as a 50” Panasonic VT20 3d plasma, and I think plasma will still have the edge in regards to picture quality (especially black levels and fast motion).
