Director James Cameron has revealed that his 3D Hollywood sensation Avatar will become available on Blu-ray 3D this November.
The movie, launched at cinemas in December 2009, has become the highest-grossing film of all time and the first to earn over $2 billion at the box office.
Once described by analysts as the "holy grail of 3D", its arrival on the recently-finalised Blu-ray 3D format is expected to act as a catalyst for the adoption of 3D TV technologies in the home.
Many of the world's leading consumer electronics manufacturers are on course to introduce 3D-capable television sets as soon as next month, followed by a wave of 3D launches later in the year - including BSkyB's launch of Europe's first dedicated 3D TV channel in April.
Ahead of the upcoming Blu-ray 3D launch, Avatar will become available in standard 2D DVD and Blu-ray on April 22nd. Director James Cameron also revealed in an interview with MTV (embedded below) that special edition releases are expected to follow at a later date.
During the same interview, Cameron also sheds a little light on his plans for Avatar 2, suggesting that the sequel will feature the same characters and act as a continuation of the first movie. The relevant interview segment can be viewed below.
