UK-based PURE Digital - one of the world’s leading manufacturer of DAB digital radios - has today announced a new flagship system, the EVOKE-2S.

The DAB-and-FM radio, pictured below, is successor to the award-winning EVOKE-2XT and promises to provide "significant electronic, audio, cosmetic and functional improvements that make it the best PURE stereo digital radio yet".

Aesthetics haven't been overhauled, but there are noticeable differences. The maple-veneer chassis remains, but the chrome bezel surrounding the speakers adds a touch more sophistication, as does the flush keypad. The EVOKE-2XT's white-on-blue display has been replaced in favour of an Organic LED, and the revised speaker system can be seen clearly.

Speaking of the speaker system, PURE has used improved 3in mid-range drivers and added two ¾in dome tweeters. The revised setup is powered by PURE's Clearsound technology - an all-new subsystem that utilises a switch-mode power supply, Class D amplifiers and digital audio shaping technology. We've yet to hear the results, but PURE insists that the 30W RMS power output makes for the "best-sounding portable radio yet".

As you'd expect, the EVOKE-2S supports pause and live rewind as well as Intellitext and textSCAN. There's a 3.5mm line in for connecting a portable music player, and a USB port for software upgrades. The included ChargePAK battery promises 20 hours of operation from a single charge, and the EVOKE-2S is PURE's first radio to include a dedicated power off switch to further help preserve battery life.

It's marketed as one of the best DAB solutions available, and will retail at a suggested price of £169.99 when it lands next month. It's pricey, but if you live and die by the radio, this could be for you.

Looks interesting. At £170, it's more than I'll pay, but if street prices are a bit more realistic, and if the sound quality is good (because I found previous models a bit tinny and lacking in depth), I'll have one of these. I've been looking for something like it.
