iTunes facing a new global threat

They say that competition is good for the consumer and in 2008, it'll be good for the music-buying consumer as Amazon's MP3 store plans on going global.

Though no official date has been given, Bill Carr, Amazon.com Vice President of Digital Music said in an official press release:

"We have received thousands of e-mails from Amazon customers around the world asking us when we will make Amazon MP3 available outside of the U.S. They can't wait to choose from the biggest selection of high-quality, low-priced DRM-free MP3 music downloads which play on virtually any music device they own today or will own in the future. We are excited to tell those customers today that Amazon MP3 is going international this year."

The news, although not unexpected, won't be music to Apple's ears. iTunes, Apple's hugely popular music store, is dominant in the market today but Amazon's commitment to DRM-free downloads from all four major studios is already proving popular in the US.

As Amazon's MP3 store begins its global roll out, we expect competitive prices and better options for us consumers. At present, users purchasing tracks on Apple's iTunes in Europe pay more than users in the US. If Amazon can keep costs down for European users, it could be the biggest threat to iTunes to date.
