GigaWorks HD50 promise great sound and a tidier desktop

HEXUS CES 2008 coverage

Speakers have seen quite a turn around over the past year. In the past, with 2.1, 5.1 and 7.1 systems proving ever popular in the home, we'd have expected to see 20.1 systems by 2015. That isn't the case at all and we're witnessing quite the opposite.

With consumers wanting less clutter and indeed less wires, more and more of us are opting to go back to simple 2.0 setups and with just cause. Some of the recent 2.0 offerings from Creative and others leave little need for bigger, cluttered systems.

Announced at CES, Creative's trendy-looking GigaWorks HD50 are the companies latest foray into the 2.0 market and will retail at £99.99. Creative claim the "GigaWorks HD50 speakers are designed to deliver truly ‘big’ sound in a remarkably small footprint" and do so with the following key features:

  • Creative High Definition Drivers give full-range music reproduction and outstanding bass results
  • Titanium Super Tweeters for smooth, high-frequency reproduction and vocal clarity
  • BasXPort™ technology for enhanced bass impact without a subwoofer
  • Convenient, front-mounted controls for volume/power
  • Blue LED indicates when speakers are on

Creative's European brand manager, John Keybeck, states "In the GigaWorks HD50s we’re giving this market a new route to audio excellence in a compact format that combines great music with easy, two-piece installation on the smallest desktop. Trust GigaWorks HD50s to provide pure music listening with any PC, laptop or MP3 player."

Pictured below, they certainly look good and we're quietly confident that they'll sound the part too, particularly if Creative's T20s are anything to go by. No news on availability just yet.

Do 2.0 speakers really provide good enough bass these days?

I've got a cheap Altec Lansing surround sound system for my PC.
The T20s really were very good and gave good bass reproduction. Granted, it's not quite up there with a subwoofer but it's surprisingly good. I'm using a 5.1 setup in my room at the moment and want to switch to a 2.0 just to get rid of all the wires, I think the HD50s might just be right for me.

Not too sure on the silver though, it looks nice but most the hardware in this room is black. Hmmm.
