Survey of UK brits reveals what we miss most about the Nineties, from Shaggy to Shag Bands to celebrate the return of this iconic phone
9th August 2018, London - The iconic Nokia 8110 is available to pre-order now at Carphone Warehouse, EE, O2, Vodafone and other key retailers and e-tailers for a RRP of £69. Coming in Black or Yellow and oozing 90s style, the Nokia 8110 will be on shelves in the UK from 15th August.
Reloading the legendary Nokia 8110, made famous in the Matrix, this 4G feature phone comes complete with the elegantly curved slider design. With a familiar and easy to use interface, the Nokia 8110 features intuitive tactile mechanics, with slide to answer and end calls, as well as an addictive helicopter-style spin on its axis.
To celebrate the return of the Nokia 8110, the UK public were asked what they missed most about the decade. 90s fashion might be big on Instagram, but it seems what the British public really want to see making a comeback from the 90s is the music. When asked what the best thing was about the 90s, music from the decade that gave us Livin’ La Vida Loca, the Macarena and Barbie Girl came out on top with 36% of the vote.
With a revival of 90s fashion scraping just under 10% of votes the 90s was a decade defined by pop. Goodbye Baby G’s and Butterfly Clips, hello Blink 182 and Green Day. When it comes to music we miss Pop Punk over and above other defining trends of the decade including teen soaps and the classic ‘Rachel’ haircut.
Don’t look back in anger, Liam
The biggest question of all however is who really won the ultimate pop-feud – Oasis v Blur. When asked which band Brits would bring back Oasis was the overwhelming winner. Their classic rivals Blur picked up just 26% of the vote. And proving that you can’t put a good one-hit wonder in the corner, ultimate long-haired popsters Hanson picked up over 20% of votes.
90s tech sliding back into style
After music, the next best-loved 90s trend was era-defining classic tech including Gameboys, Bleepers and Chat Rooms (24%). Over a third of us still owns a classic 90s gadget, a symbol of our ongoing love of retro tech. In fact, 20% of respondents agreed that the best thing to make a comeback from the 90s right now is Nokia’s classic 8110 – made famous in the Matrix trilogy from 1999.
Speaking of comeback kids, film plays a big part in our love for the 90s, with 34% saying Jurassic Park is the best revival of the decade.
Fashion icons and fashion fails
What ever happened to Shag bands? Well, it seems this was a tabloid- concocted trend that passed most people by. But for 25% of Brits, what happened in the 90s stays in the 90s. Yes they wore them, and no they won’t tell us why.
Fashion was however, led by music. Voters crowned Gwen Stefani (40%) the fashion icon of the age followed closely by Destiny’s Child (26%). And with the return of bindis, crop tops and chokers it seems they might be the icons of today too.
