Radon is a colourless, odourless radioactive gas formed by the radioactive decay of the small amounts of uranium that occur naturally in all rocks and soils. It cannot be seen, smelt or tasted. The radon level in the air we breathe outside is very low but can rise to high levels when trapped indoors.
Radon exposure claims the lives of approximately 1,100[1] British people each year, more than three times the number of deaths[2] attributed annually to house fires and carbon monoxide poisoning combined.
