AUSTIN, TX-February 19, 2003-AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced the AMD Alchemy(tm) Solutions Au1100(tm) processor has been selected by Code Corporation to power the groundbreaking Code Reader 2, a next generation bar code reading solution.

In the bar code industry, the increasing use of high capacity symbols, which can carry hundreds of bytes of data in the same area in which a linear bar code carries twelve bytes, is helping drive significant improvements for customers. These high capacity symbols allow for tracking more consumer product information such as expiration dates and production batches, or for tracking such data as medical information on drivers' licenses and identification cards.

"Historically, two-dimensional symbol readers have performed poorly when reading simple one-dimensional bar codes," said George Powell, CEO of the Code Corporation. "They have also been heavy, large and expensive. Using the Au1100 processor to power the Code Reader 2 enabled us to leap into the future by incorporating high-end vision capabilities into a compact, battery-powered package with real-time cordless data communication to any number of compatible systems."

Enabled by the high-performance and low-power consumption of the Au1100 processor, the portable, lightweight Code Reader 2 excels at reading both traditional linear bar codes and new, complex two-dimensional matrix symbols required to track increasingly large amounts of data.

"We are focused on providing our customers industry-leading high-performance, low-power and high-integration solutions that foster innovative designs," said Phil Pompa, vice president of marketing for AMD's Personal Connectivity Solution Group. "Code Corporation took the performance and power advantages of the Au1100 processor-400 MHz at .25 watts-which enable longer battery life, smaller, lighter form factor and a rich feature set, and maximized them to create a highly competitive product."

Many customers have selected AMD Alchemy Solutions processors to power a wide variety of products, including the Sony VPL-PX15 LCD Data Projector and the Apple AirPort Extreme.

About the AMD Alchemy(tm) Solutions Au1100(tm) Processor
The AMD Alchemy Au1100 processor is a System-on-a-Chip (SOC) based on the MIPS32(tm) instruction set and includes an enhanced CPU core, customized memory controller and a set of industry standard communication peripherals. These integrated peripherals include one 10/100 Ethernet MAC, USB Host and Device controller, PCMCIA/Compact Flash interface, IrDA controller, AC97 interface (external CODEC required), two Secure Digital (SD) controllers, three UART's, two SSI controllers, EJTAG, and 48 General Purpose I/O (GPIO) pins.

Of special note, the Au1100 processor integrates an LCD controller, which enables high quality graphics and video on mobile information appliances. The LCD controller will drive single and dual panel color, TFT and STN displays up to 640x480 (VGA) or 800x600 (SVGA) at 16bpp supported through a unified SDRAM-based frame buffer. The LCD controller also features a display rotate for portrait-vs-landscape formatting of images. Altogether, the enhanced CPU core, integrated communications peripherals, and the on-chip LCD controller make the Au1100 processor ideally suited for high performance, versatile mobile information appliances that require very low power consumption.

The Au1100 processor is designed to run a variety of operating systems, including Windows(r) CE.NET, Linux and VxWorks.
