TV everywhere

The UK joint venture between Orange and T-Mobile - Everything Everywhere - has announced it's enhancing its mobile TV platform with a view to making it ‘best in class'.

EE is partnering with video delivery specialist Red Bee Media to incorporate its RedPlayer into the platform, with a view to increasing the range of devices a mobile TV subscription can be offered to. With all this new technology in place, EE anticipates a six-fold increase in its mobile TV subscribers over the next three years, but doesn't state what the current number is.

"The new delivery platform is just the start, and we have several significant developments planned for our service over the next 12 months which will really transform the way consumers view mobile TV," said Paul Jevons, director of products at EE.

"We'll also be looking at new technologies as they become available, including the ability to stream 3D content to handsets with 3D capable screens - so our customers will only continue ro receive the best services we are able to offer them."

The new platform will stream live content from over 40 channels, including ITV, Sky and CNN. It will also be available to tablet users and allow switching between 3G and Wi-Fi.

The biggest barrier to making mobile TV viable is the enormous amount of bandwidth is requires. Parallel networks have been considered, as have services such as Qualcomm's Flo TV, but this seems to be a move back to good old 3G. There was no indication of when this new, improved service will become available.

How about better 3G coverage first? I lose signal in most places I go. Most importantly home and work.
I already have mobile TV, it's called TVCatchup.com….

Seconded.

Also EE / T-mobile / Orange have rubbish data allowances and rubbish 3.5g speeds unless your willing to pay for extra bundles on top of most internet packages.

EE / T-mobile / Orange should take a leaf out of Three on data packages and speeds before een trying to use more of their limited bandwidth.

Is that just newpackages? I'm currently paying £10/month and it includes unlimited data allowance (which equates to 3GB/month fair use).

I have a similar package to you and get full internet speeds (upto 2mb/s) and don't pay extra, but around January this year, all internet booster packs had their speeds reduced down to 3g speeds. Also the data was capped at 500mb per month. To get past this you have to pay extra for an additional internet package.

So people who think they get internet with their new package have to really read the small print to see what speeds and allowance they will get. Most people get the slower speeds and fair usage allowance.
