Chasing the dragon
A week ago we wrote an analysis of the mobility sector, predicting that the big fight to be the brains of our future connected smart devices will end up being between Intel and Qualcomm. We also wrote that Qualcomm has a significant head-start.
The proof of this head-start is likely to be made available for consumers to play with next month as Toshiba has just sent out invites to the press launch of the TG01 - the first product to contain Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipset.
Snapdragon combines ARM designs with Qualcomm's own processor, graphics and connectivity, resulting in what is claimed to be an unprecedented amount of processor grunt at such a low power envelope.
What this actually means for the end-user, however, remains unproven, which is why the launch of the TG01 is such a big deal.
The press invite is for 9 July and, while Toshiba is insisting that doesn't necessarily mean it will be launched on that day, we expect it to arrive soon after. The flyer also mentions and exclusive network partner.
UPDATE - 18:45 2 July 2009: The TG01 has apparently been spotted on the Orange UK website, but the link to it has now been taken down.
