Following in the footsteps of a similar program in Glasgow, The Cloud will be giving away free WiFi access for 15 minutes each day through its hotspots in central London.
According to City AM, the service will go live tomorrow and deliver the square-mile's 350,000 workers - as well as untold numbers of tourists - free internet access across the blanket of wireless hotspots.
The announcement comes only a few days after BSkyB picked up The Cloud for a hair under £50 million. Although the scheme was probably on the cards for some time before the acquisition, it's possible that Sky pushed the roll-out forward to counter O2's big WiFi announcement last week.
The mobile operator recently unveiled its plans to roll out a massive WiFi network that will apparently have more hotspots than The Cloud and BT Openzone combined by 2013. Best of all, the service will be totally free, regardless of who your mobile or broadband operator is. Although the company has been pretty cagey on the details, we assume that the network will be at least partially ad-funded.
In the meantime, The Cloud's alternative should provide users with more than enough uptime to pull in e-mails, get directions or do any other basic tasks on their smart-devices. Although one of either free WiFi or 3G connectivity are available pretty much everywhere in the City, it's comforting to have another option, especially for those devices that don't have a mobile data-connection.
