In a case of whatever you can do, we can do it better; Seagate takes a swipe at Western Digital's 2TB hard-drive by announcing one of its own. This time around, however, Seagate makes no secret of the rotational-spin rate, letting you know it's the full-fat 7,200rpm off the bat.

Part of the Constellation ES series, the 2TB monster will be released in Q3 of this year, and feature either a SATA or SAS 2.0 (serial-attached SCSI v2, operating at 6Gb/s) interface. Knowing that the drive will be available in capacities of 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB, platter-size is obvious: 500GB.

Seagate will also release 2.5in Constellation drives in 160GB and 500GB capacities this quarter, again with the enterprise sector in mind, appreciating the 7,200rpm spindle speed, SAS 2.0 or SATA interface, just like the bigger-capacity, 3.5in models.

Trouble is, Seagate won't be drawn on price, and with the Western Digital 2TB GreenPower now selling for around £200, we'll have to wait a while until we can get our mitts on the only other 2TB drive around.

hey why don't they just issue a press release saying they have a 42TB drive spinning at a million RPM….. available in 2087.

This won't be out until at least last summer, as you say the WD is available (roughly) now. By late summer I would expect a 2TB Blue and a Black from WD as well. So that will be 3x 2TB drives in WDs lineup, with the bugs and manufacturing issues worked out as they will have been around for 6 months.

Press releases are all well and good, but come on, show us the drives!
They say it as if variable RPM is a bad thing. WD did a good thing with that IMHO.
Am i the only one that prefers to have data spread out across lower capacity drives? (providing there is room for more drives ;))

Well.. i say lower capacity… 500GB + 500GB + 640GB…
But then you need three of four times the physical space and your storage will be using three or four times the power.

I could sell one of my N5200s, 5x1TB drives and 5x500gb drives if I bought 5x2TB drives. Hmmmm that could be an idea…..

4 x 1TB in RAID 5

Plus stand-alones:
1 x 1TB
1 x 500GB
3 x 320GB
2 x External 200GB

And I keep running out of space….it all depends on your needs.

Give bigger drives!!!
