Mobile etiquette

Intel is not letting its continued under-representation in the mobile device market stand in the way of issuing press releases on the matter.

The latest pretext comes in the form of a UK survey into mobile etiquette, or lack of. A thousand Brits were asked what pisses them off most about other people's use of mobile devices.

It turns out that talking too loudly on mobile phones in public is the number one annoyance, with 67 percent of those surveyed flagging it up. Such was their intolerance for this Dom Joly-like behaviour, that respondents said they found public nose-picking less offensive.

But such heinous crimes as swearing and smoking were still deemed worse, even, than having a phone call. And while 11 percent of respondents complained of their partner using their mobile device in the bedroom - which we can imagine would be pretty far from an aphrodisiac - the dinner table is still considered the rudest place to use a mobile device, let alone a notebook.

"Unsurprisingly, we are still working out the right social rules; from texting your friends while on a date to Tweeting during your own wedding, societies and cultures haven't quite sorted out how the devices will find a comfortable place in our lives," said Intel fellow Genevieve Bell. "While inappropriate mobile use is certainly an invasion of privacy, we can't deny the reliance on these devices, and the positive impact they have on our lives.

"The thing about etiquette and manners is that they are always adapting and changing. The pace of technology right now makes us feel like we are constantly behind. When we look at the survey data and begin to understand the frustrations - and in some cases confusion - around how mobile devices are used, it's clear that some things will remain anti-social for generations to come."
