Last quarter was pretty monumental for AMD as it managed to overtake NVIDIA in terms of total GPUs and discrete graphics cards shipped. It looks like that win wasn't just a fluke, though, as the company has managed to hold onto the position for the third quarter of the year.
According to the latest figures from Jon Peddie Research, AMD captured 22.3 per cent of the total GPU market, down from 25 per cent last quarter. Though NVIDIA did manage to gain some ground this time, it was only able to account for 21.2 per cent of the market, up 1.5 points from the second quarter.
These numbers equate to 11 per cent growth for the Radeon-maker year-on-year and a contraction of 16.1 per cent for the green team.
As ever, Intel was the big winner, accounting for 55.6 per cent of the market - an increase of 3.2 per cent over the previous quarter.
AMD attributed the decrease to lower overall demand and the fact that OEMs were running down inventory - a reasonable explanation, considering that they were preparing new GPUs in anticipation of the 6800-series graphics-cards, launched last week.
The results must be disappointing for NVIDIA, though. Despite releasing the critically-lauded GTX 460 at the beginning of the quarter, it doesn't seem to have put too much of a dent in AMD's recent run of form. Of course, telling numbers will be provided next quarter, following the release of more second-generation DX11 GPUs from AMD, and the rumoured launch of a new high-end GeForce card.
