Eyefinity branches out

AMD has announced the launch of a new family of professional graphics cards - the ATI FirePro V8800 - which is the first to support its Eyefinity multi-screen technology.

What we seems to be looking at here is the professional version of the ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition, with the big difference - apart from the usual ‘pro' tweaks and support - being that the V8800 only has four Display Port connectors, rather than the six mini-Display Ports on the Radeon. Hence it can support up to four 30 inch displays.

"We're bringing many of the same cutting edge innovations from our ATI Radeon HD 5000 series to the professional graphics market for the first time. The ATI FirePro V8800 with ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology effectively dissolves visual limitations for professionals," said Rick Bergman, SVP and GM of the AMD Products Group.

Aimed at the CAD, digital content and scientific workstation markets, a FirePro V8800 will set you back $1499. It supports OpenGL, Open CL and DX 11. Further additions to the new professional family will be announced in the next few months.

Out of interest whats the actual difference in one of these and a 5870? basically where does the extra cost come from.

I know there is a few 4870s here at work but I have no idea why as I only saw the invoice.
difference is in the drivers… they “qualify” them for certain applications. $1500 is VERY competitive (against NVidia). It “CAN” make the difference between working and not working in some cases. Basically programmers doing many tests etc
