Why didn't we see it yesterday?

Even if we do see product very soon, why wasn't it available first thing yesterday? We reckon, this time round, someone with vision and influence within AMD made the decision to ensure that the mistakes of the 4800 series launch weren't repeated.

Then, AMD was so keen to have full product availability on the day of launch that it shipped to the channel well in advance. Predictably some etailers tried to get ahead of their competitors by offering the product early, before even journalists were ready to publish their reviews.

We were in Malaga with AMD for the launch when this happened and saw them make the decision to launch early there and then. AMD presumably didn't want a repeat of that incident.

The launch of a new product does seem to be a delicate matter; make product available too early and someone might jump the gun, leave it too late and everyone moans about availability.

Do you think they've got it right this time? How do you think the major vendors have handled launches in the past? Let us know in the the HEXUS.community.

I'm very disappointed, I still cant get one. And I'm not paying £400 for one.

To be honest the £400 and lack of general availability is not surprising.

Why? because the distributor is probably refusing to sell to companies who will not agree to their minimum price.
I somehow don't think the price-gouging is anything to do with the distributors… companies like OcUK probably pay a bit more to soak up the initial stock (and then sell it at a further profit), but enough companies have them at decent prices for pre-orders to suggest it's not costing them much more than it otherwise will.

Of course some companies will just follow OcUK and price accordingly for a while…

£400 for a reference card with reference clocks is ludicrous (~£70 more than it will be in a couple of weeks). It's almost NVIDIA like.
“ATI Radeon HD 4870 HD” or “ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2”?

:)
but the 1GB 4870s are around £190 IICR, so the 4870X2 for about £400 inc first week gouging aint bad at all
