As 2009 drew to a close, Taiwanese tech giants Foxconn and Acer moved to position themselves for strengthening tech sector recovery. Google continued to bolster its position with the release of betas of its Chrome OS and the imminent launch of its own smartphone. Google also attempted to appease Rupert Murdoch, who continued to complain about its appropriation of his content.
On the phone side, UK handset-maker INQ and Motorola both unveiled smartphones in time for Christmas and operator O2 trialled LTE in the UK. Meanwhile, Intel's difficult year came to a familiar close as the FTC decided to sue it for its business practices.
As Christmas sales were slow to pick up, all reasonably objective, independent music fans got a boost when a campaign, which started on Facebook, successfully supplanted the latest X Factor offering with Rage Against The Machine's Killing in the Name as the Christmas number one. There was also hope that the TV market was going to become more democratic as Project Canvas got the green light from the BBC Trust.
