Overall notebook market

The exponential growth of the netbook market is a lone bright spot in a market otherwise feeling the pinch from the state of the global economy.

DisplaySearch has had to negatively revise its forecast for the total notebook market for both 2008 and 2009. It cites a combination of businesses shedding employees and extending PC replacement cycles as the main reasons for the decline in the market and reckons the biggest players will continue to gain market share at the expense of all the others.

The table below shows how Acer and ASUS have benefitted from the success of their netbooks in the form of increase volume of products shipped and hence total market share. It must be stressed, however, that volume market share is mainly being gained by offering low price products so it's fair to assume that margins continue to shrink.

Which is cheaper? Let me think………

And I doubt the aggressive marketing at Tescos has hurt in the UK either
And the prominent display in PC World. I think, much as I don't generally have much time for them, Acer have nailed the target market dead on. I think Asus are being squeezed at the £300 mark by Samsung - let's face it, unless you MUST have SSD storage, the NC10 stomps all over Asus' equivalents. At the £200 end, Acer are providing everything users need.
