Storage evaluation

For the purposes of our storage benchmarks, we're only comparing shipping systems and not HEXUS' own Sturgeon-based system.

It's no surprise to see two RAIDed Raptors beat off a single Maxtor. The Maxtor performs as well as can be expected in HDTach, though.

Burst speeds are about the same, both systems using SATA 3Gbps, of course.

Again a pair of faster-spinning Raptors can provide access to data in half the time of the Maxtor in MESH's system.

USB2.0 performance was tested with an external caddy and 160GB Western Digital PATA drive. The MESH Elite Extreme SLI edges slightly in front of the SCAN FX-62 system, but not by a huge amount. Both have good USB2.0 controllers in place.

It seems the Elite Extreme SLI's biggest let-down could well be its storage. While spacious, it's not as quick as can be had. Perhaps a compromise could be made here, involving a single Raptor for performance and a secondary, larger drive for more general storage? Still, while the drive in MESH's system is quite willing and able, it would be nice to see something quicker in there.
