Thoughts

It just so happens that I was looking for an external enclosure for testing at HEXUS, and the Icy Box seemed to fit my needs rather nicely. It's a simple device and easy to maintain, in terms of swapping out disks during my testing, and combined with the style, lack of noise and its manageable heat output, I'm happy to recommend it.

It's not truly portable in the sense that it's tied to its power adaptor, since it can't be powered by the USB2.0 bus, but if your needs fit it's a great little enclosure.

The only problem, for U.K readers at least, is that RaidLogic currently don't have a U.K-based reseller for their Icy Box range, so you'll struggle to find one here. I'm pretty sure that'll change in the near future, but until then you'll be stuck contacting their reseller list, available on their website, should you want one.

In the giant sea of new, affordable external hard disk enclosures, the Icy Box stands out due to its appearance and ease of use.

Recommended if you're in the market for such a device.

Editor's Note: Since I completed the review a couple of days ago, it's been pointed out that Scan are stocking the Icy Box in the U.K., so head over there if you're keen.

Score

8 out of 10

Pros

Stylish
Keeps the contained disk quiet
Doesn't run hot
Not too expensive

Cons

Performance wasn't brilliant
Hard to find in the U.K.

Thanks

Nanopoint for helping me get a unit to the U.K.

I have one! However, mine is the USB2.0 & Firewire version. It's working great over firewire, which is my interface of choice.

I will second Rys' recommendation.
Just got mine today, after my last enclosure failed me. Great piece of kit, almost silent, and seems to keep things pretty cool.
Just to say that in the UK these can also be found at www.overclock.co.uk

I dont work for them, I am just a very happy customer !
Just a couple of questions on this product

1) How do you stand it up on its end, and still manage to insert the power and usb cables, also how do you switch it on. The only way you can stand it on its end is to have the cables at the top (very unsightly).

2) Advertised as being ‘extreme noiseless’, well if that is the case, then mine must be faulty, cos as soon as you turn it on you can hear the disk spinning, and every time you access the drive in it, you can hear that as well.

Has anyone else come accross these issues

Forgot to mention using a maxtor dx740 40gb drive
