Final Thoughts and Rating

...the diskless LinkStation 421DE is a capable performer and can be recommended for users looking to take their first steps into the world of network-attached storage

The Buffalo LinkStation 421DE is an ideal starting point for home users looking to consolidate their media library in one central location.

Priced at under Ā£140 and delivered in a tidy, compact chassis, the dual-bay NAS is simple to use and offers a handful of well-implemented features. These include a dedicated BitTorrent client, a DLNA media server, built-in FTP and print servers, and support for scheduled backups - including Apple Time Machine.

Making these home-user features as accessible as can be, Buffalo's streamlined user interface is a step in the right direction and provides easy access to all common features. Setup wizards are at hand to help NAS newcomers through the configuration process, and though the system works well for the intended audience, experienced customers may lament the lack of finer controls such as a power on/off schedule.

There's room for Buffalo's new user interface to evolve with greater functionality - we'd really like to see support for hard-disk spin down sooner rather than later - but on the whole the diskless LinkStation 421DE is a capable performer and can be recommended for users looking to take their first steps into the world of network-attached storage.

The Good

Compact design
Streamlined user interface
Front-facing USB 3.0 port
Good data transfer speeds

The Bad

Lacks power schedule support
No HDD spin-down when idle

Shame about the lack of spindown/shut down - I wouldn't like to just power off a storage device!

Also, what's fan noise like? A few of these devices have terrible tiny fans.
The fact the disks are always spun up is good for systems where small amounts of data are constantly being read I guess Like in a group Media server or something but I just think its gunna be louder and more power-consuming than the rest of the competition when idle
I've recently purchased there 2TB linkstation drive and was also a bit surprised to find I could only schedule it on / off on a time of day / week basis and not an idle spool down.
“Creating a centralised storage solution for all the devices in your home has to be one of the most satisfying hobbies a PC enthusiast can have”

At least until you have a PC with window 8 on it when it rapidly turnis into one of the most infuriating exercises ever - whether your libraries will work on the NAS is a total lottery (never got Windows photos app to work) but that is because MS believes that anyone who has a NAS is a fool and should use MS Skydrive.

Any how back to linkstation. Nice price, decent performace but a 2 bay drive is not for me. 4 Bay for Raid 5 for me
