Nvidia's GeForce GTX 980M remains a go-to choice for high-performance gaming laptops. The Gigabyte P35X v5, P37X and MSI GT72S are all outfitted with said GPU, and in-game performance is right in line with expectations. The P35X v5 scores higher in 3DMark, and we're putting that down to a newer driver.

Gaming Performance at 1080p

Game Quality Settings
Average FPS
Alien: Isolation SMAA-T2x, Maximum Quality
110.2
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Ultra Quality Preset
67.1
Total War: Rome II Extreme Quality Preset
51.7

This is one of the quickest mobile GPUs that money can buy, but the GTX 980M shouldn't be confused with its desktop namesake. The mobile part isn't anywhere near as quick but is perfectly capable of delivering smooth gameplay in the latest titles at the laptop's native 1080p resolution. There is another, faster GPU available from Nvidia's stable - the desktop-like GTX 980.

If you're trying to work out the desktop equivalent of this graphics chip, we put GTX 980M performance fractionally ahead of a Radeon R9 380X. With that amount of power at its disposal, it's a shame the P35X v5 isn't bestowed with G-Sync functionality.
