NEC launches direct-to-disc label-burning technology to rival HP's LightScribe
Although the big news from CeBIT about optical storage largely concerns Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD, it's intriguing to see that NEC - one of the big hitters in low-cost DVD burners - is offering LabelFlash, a direct-to-disc label-burning technology to rival HP's LightScribe.
It's not clear from the info that NEC is putting out at CeBIT why it thought it necessary to devise and introduce the LabelFlash system but our presumption is that the company (understandably) likes the idea of direct-to-disc label burning but not of paying the royalties that are required.
If this is correct, then it's likely that NEC's LabelFlash-equipped burners will undersell LightScribe models, though what the situation will be with the pricing of LabelFlash-compatible media is far from clear.
