Just months after announcing the industry's largest single-platter 1.8in hard drive, Toshiba is today going one better with the highest-capacity 1.8in drive to date, the 320GB MK3233GSG.

The drive, pictured below, features two 160GB platters rotating at 5,400rpm and a 16MB cache, resulting in transfer rates of 830Mbit/s, says Toshiba.

The Japanese manufacturer reckons the drive is ideally suited to high-end portable devices such as mobile computers, notebooks and external hard disks. With an operational shock resistance of 500Gs, Toshiba also reckons its 25 per cent more durable than "most" 2.5in alternatives.

We're all for more storage, and the 320GB drive - along with smaller 250GB and 160GB siblings - will enter mass production next month. Toshiba's complete specifications can be found below.

does that mean i could have a 320gb ipod classic?

they already do 320GB HDD's for classic's

and this isn't the biggest available 1.8“ drive since the Android based archos 5 goes up to 500GB and uses a 1.8” drive along with the Archos 7 had a 320GB 1.8" drive for over a year now.
Archos 5 only goes up to 250GB, unless the Archos site is wrong.

iPod classic is 160GB only, unless Apples own store is wrong.

http://www.archos.com/store/psearch.html?country=gb&lang=en&prod_id=archos5it

that link disagree's

and you can buy separate HDD's for Ipod classics.
Ah! my mistake, i was looking at the Archos 5, not the “Archos 5 Internet tablet” :)

Although I do wonder if the hard drive based units are 2.5“ drives as opposed to 1.8”

Never seen a seperate HD for iPods, do they replace the internal drive or connect externally, meaning you have two drives?
