As our portable devices become almost as capable as our personal computers, they become increasingly susceptible to viruses and other nasties too. Trojan.PSPBrick is a high damage, but relatively low distribution trojan horse targeting beloved PSPs.
PSPBrick deletes four system files from the PSP and as a result prevents the PSP from restarting properly. Perhaps what's most worrying is how this virus is being spread. PSPs are popular for their moddability, but this virus is distributed as a mod for the PSP's software, giving it a certain appeal to anyone in search of new things to do with their hand-held console.
Oliver Friedricks, Senior Manager at Symantec Security Response told 1UP.com that "You'll have to send it back to Sony for repairs" if you get stung by this trojan. To make matters worse, installing mods onto a PSP violates the license agreement with Sony, so will infected PSPs be repaired by Sony under the warranty?
Awareness of the trojan within the modding community is growing and as such the spread is being limited, but anyone downloading PSP mods should now beware of this new attack vector onto an until now virus-free product.
