Woooooaaaah!

Microsoft has managed to come up with some pretty abstract adverts in the past, and while this latest entry isn't quite on par with ‘Bill and Jerry', it should still elicit a few smiles.

In an effort to promote Windows Live Photo Gallery and Windows Movie Maker, the company has teamed up with Paul 'Bear' Vasquez to create a pair of TV spots.  Of course, you may know him better as 'the double-rainbow guy'.

In the first of the two videos, Vasquez shares his excitement for Photo Gallery - and rainbows, obviously - and its ability to automatically stitch-together photos to create panoramic shots.  The second, entitled 'Meet Bear', sees the nature-enthusiast calmly explaining how easy Movie Maker can be for editing and uploading files to video-sharing sites.

The adverts should draw out a chuckle, even if it's only at Bear's passion for rainbows.  The point, though, is that the software-giant isn't afraid to be a little silly in its advertising.

With a company as large and unwieldy as Microsoft, it would be easy to play it safe with turgid commercials while competitors continue taking pot-shots.  However, this video shows that the people in Redmond don't always take themselves too seriously.

It's clear that, even though they may not be perceived as being as 'cool' or 'edgy' as the competition, they can still have a bit of fun, even if it is at their own expense.

It's a shame the guy is a bit wooden when it's a contrived situation. Perhaps if they'd tricked him into thinking there really was another double rainbow, instead of telling him to pretend, it would have been a more convincing performance :P
For me, nothing will top the absurdity of Bill & Jerry. I know a lot of people didn't like it, but I thought it was inspired.
Are Microsoft… cool now? :geek:
