There’s life in the old dog yet

Windows 7 has sold 150 million licenses to date, making it the fastest selling operating system in computer history.

A staggering seven copies of Windows 7 are sold every second, with around three quarters of all businesses considering Microsoft's latest operating system for their organisation.

Microsoft has released beta versions of Photo Gallery, Messenger, Movie Maker and Sync today, to bolster its Windows Live proposition of free apps for sharing photos, films and messages.

The Microsoft beta programmes connect to popular video sharing websites like YouTube and Flickr, plus major social networking, blogging and email sites.  The improved Windows Live Sync keeps users' files synchronised across multiple PCs and in the cloud, even allowing them to access their PC over the web with Sync's new remote desktop feature.

The computer giant believes the new Windows Live Essentials ‘combines the power of the PC and the reach of the cloud' to enhance its Windows 7 package and recognises the way people connect and share content is continuing to shift toward the cloud.

Microsoft says the new Windows Live Essentials blends ‘the best of the PC with the best of the cloud' and maintains the PC continues to be the hub of necessary activities such as organising photos and managing mail as well as watching films.

Thank god I'm not one of them ppl paying for their OS :) I cannot justify spending that much money on W7 Ultimate. Gotta love getting it for free…
Around 306 million PC and laptop sales in 2009, worldwide, according to my Google search. Windows 7's been available to order for almost a year. I honestly thought the figure would be higher than 150 million.

Do you need the extra languages or BitLocker? 99% of people do not.

I purchased Windows 7 Home Premium x64 OEM for $109. It was well worth it. Don't tell me that's too expensive because I am sure your computer hardware itself was MUCH more than that.

Windows 7 didn't come out until October 2009. So most of the 2009 sales were Windows Vista or Windows XP until Windows 7 came out at the end of the year.

Granted, it wasn't available off the shelf until October but the pre-order push started in July. I recall PCs were being pushed with free upgrades back then too.

Considering the number of new PC/laptop units shifted in a year, it still seems low as that doesn't take into account user/business upgrades, etc.
