What is the point?

Coincidentally Apple has launched an ad campaign of its own today, but it makes no reference to Adobe.

Instead it's a new iPad ad, entitled ‘What is iPad'. As MacRumours.com pointed out, the style of the ad seems to be directly derived from the ads for the Apple Newton in the 1990, which was the first device to be called a PDA, but could just as easily be thought of as Apple's first effort at a tablet.

And there's another parallel to be drawn between the Newton and the iPad. Apple was one of the founder members of UK chip designer ARM - in partnership with Acorn and VLSI technology. A big reason for Apple's interest in ARM was the Newton, which ran on ARM processors.

The iPad is Apple's first device to run on its own processor - the A4 - which was developed around technology licensed from ARM. So things seem to have come full circle.
