Microsoft's Windows Home Server has always had plenty going for it, but almost three years after its first release - and three Power Packs later - it remains a relatively niche product.
Hoping to expand its appeal, the software giant has been quietly working on a second-generation release, codenamed Vail, and has this week surprised users by announcing a public beta release.
Windows Home Server V2, available as a beta from Microsoft Connect, provides users with the first up-close look at Microsoft's future vision of a centrally-connected home environment.
In addition to offering the existing functionality of Windows Home Server - including automated backups, media streaming and remote access - the V2 Vail release introduces improvements in what Microsoft describes as "key" areas.
Users can expect a streamlined setup process and spruced-up user interface, whilst new features include multi-PC backup and restore and media streaming outside of the home. Useful additions, but with recent rumours suggesting that Vail would introduce complete Windows Media Center integration, as well as support for Windows Live Mesh, we're left feeling a tad disappointed. Microsoft does add, however, that "things may change" as development work continues.
Described as a major release, Windows Home Server V2 is built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 code base and will therefore support only 64-bit systems. Highlighting the potential pitfalls of using beta software, Microsoft states that its preview should only be installed on a secondary computer to prevent the risk of data loss.
The beta also includes a new Windows Home Server SDK, but users should note that existing Windows Home Server add-ins won't be compatible with Vail. The good news is that the V2 release includes a dedicated app store dubbed the "Online Add-in Catalog" and a new streamlined process for installing third-party add-ins.
